Corruption, offshore banking and corporate conduct: from the 2007 Kroll report on Kenya to the 2019 Fishrot Files on Namibia's fishing quotas.
Overview
Our publications on companies, banks and the use of private wealth. The Kroll report on assets linked to Kenya's former president Daniel arap Moi (2007), Bank Julius Baer's Cayman Islands operation (2008), the Minton report on Trafigura's toxic waste in Côte d'Ivoire (2009), the Kaupthing Bank loan book (2009).
They came for us in court each time: a US judge disabled wikileaks.org in 2008, a UK super-injunction hit the Guardian in 2009, and another silenced Iceland's national broadcaster the same year. The Fishrot Files (2019) exposed Icelandic payments for Namibian fishing quotas and brought down two Namibian ministers.
What reporting revealed
- The Kroll report alleged Moi's family and associates moved more than £1bn of public money to 28 countries.
- A US federal judge disabled wikileaks.org on 15 February 2008 for Bank Julius Baer; it was dissolved two weeks later.
- Trafigura's lawyers abandoned the Minton injunction on 16 October 2009 after a parliamentary question.
- An injunction stopped RÚV reporting the Kaupthing loan book on 1 August 2009; they showed the WikiLeaks link instead.
- Namibia's fisheries and justice ministers resigned the day after we published the Fishrot Files.
