010400Z TF RAPTOR IED IVO JALALABAD

While conducting a RCP mission with RCP 4, the convoy was halted by ANP, who reported that there was an IED ahead on the road. ANP reported that some kids had found a battery and wire on the side of the road. The EOD Team deployed the Talon robot to search the side of the road and found nothing. The EOD Team Leader then used the RG 31 to search for the IED again finding nothing. Team Leader then donned the bomb suit to search areas that the robot couldnt reach. The Team Leader identified wire and brown packing tape hidden in the rocks along side the road and immediately returned to the safe area and redeployed the robot to safely separate the RC device from the IED. The team then traced out the wire which led to a 4 inch diameter piece of PVC pipe approx 2 feet long, filled with unknown explosives buried beneath rocks and small amount of soil. A charge was placed on top of the PVC pipe and detonated. The Team conducted a search for secondary hazards and remaining pieces of the main charge finding fragments of a 107 mm HE rocket and no secondary hazards. The rocket apparently had been buried under the PVC pipe. Pieces of the frag, RC device and Battery were turned over to CEXC. All explosive hazards were disposed of on scene.
